David Bailey

Well known photographer,  David Bailey, born January 2nd 1938,  is recognised for his work with portraits. Bailey has photographed some of the most influential people of the 21st century, such as Will Smith, Mick Jagger and Jack Nichloson.

"I've always tried to do pictures that don't date. I always go for simplicity."

The english photographer was surrounded by films at a young age as he recalls his family "would take bread-and-jam sandwiches and go to the cinema every night...I'll bet I saw seven or eight movies a week." He went on to be contracted as a fashion photographer for British Vogue magazine in 1960 resulting in 800 pages of Vogue editorial in one year. American Vogue's director Grace Coddington spoke about him, saying; "It was the Sixties, it was a raving time, and Bailey was unbelievably good-looking. He was everything that you wanted him to be – like the Beatles but accessible – and when he went on the market everyone went in. We were all killing ourselves to be his model..."

In his career, Bailey has worked with many well known figures such as The Beatles, Kray twins, and Andy Warhol and in 2001, as part of the Queen's Birthday Honours, he was awarded a CBE for services to art.                              

Man Ray & Laszlo Maholy Nagy

Man Ray - 

Emmanuel Rudnitzky or Man Ray, was born July 20, 1895 and died in 1946. Ray was a Hungarian painter and photographer who spent a lot of his time in Paris as he moved there in 1921. Ray contributed to movements such as Surrealism and Dada, along with Avant-garde. A famous piece from this time was the "Violin d'Ingres." 

This was a photograph of his lover 'Kiki' that he modified to make                her body look similar to a violin. 

Photograms - 

Man Ray is best known for his breakthrough work in Photograms, and his development of them. He started this by exposing photographic paper to a bare lightbulb, shadows appeared from the objects around, so he decided to expose the image three more times to get the final outcome of an abstract style print with two head and hand shapes overlaying one another. 

Man Ray continued to do experiments like these, leading to the creation of the 'Rayograph' in the 20th century. The artwork in this collection were made by using everyday objects and turning them into abstract, surreal images. 

 I like Man Ray's artwork as it shows his experimentation throughout piece, i also think that it is inspiring as he is able to create artist prints just using simple objects and manipulating light.
